TECHNOLOGY CONSERVATION GROUP DE MEXICO in Guadalajara has received the Clean Industry Certification from PROFEPA, the Federal Environmental Protection agency of the Government of Mexico.

A new task force was launched in November, aligned with America Recycles Day.  President Obama launched a special task force in order to help the government “lead by example in responsibly recycling its used electronics”.  With more states coming on board with laws each year banning land fill disposal of electronic waste, President Obama is setting a terrific example.  Read more here http://www.earthtechling.com/2010/12/feds-tackle-e-waste-with-new-task-force/

Many companies today have heard the loud voices of the masses wanting less harmful material in electronics and less damaging material in our landfills.  Acer, Hewlett Packard, and Phillips are just a few companies using fewer harmful chemicals in their new products.  Chemicals like brominated flame retardants and PVC plastics are being left out of many new smart phones, computers and televisions.  While our world is getting on the right track with electronics stewardship initiatives laws, it is nice to see that the companies creating the products are doing their part to reduce the chemicals they use in manufacturing which will make the end of life disposal easier to manage.  Read more here  http://www.guardian.co.uk/sustainable-business/greenpeace-electronics-campaigning-sustainability-waste

Wisconsin residents began recycling electronics this year as mandated by law.  The program is called E-Cycle Wisconsin and is a statewide program to collect and recycle certain electronics.  This law also sets targets for registered manufacturers to recycle 80% of the weight of Covered Electronic Devices (CEDs) they sold to Wisconsin households, K-12 public schools and Milwaukee Parental Choice Program schools during an earlier 12-month period.  To read additional information on the recycling law and targets that have been put in place visit http://dnr.wi.gov/org/aw/wm/ecycle/.

North Carolina residents are preparing for a 2011 state law banning electronic waste being disposed of in landfills.  Effective July 1, the city will no longer collect electronic material as waste.  Each local government in North Carolina has until the end of 2010 to create a plan for alternatives to the landfill and also must endorse the ban in order to receive state funding for their projects.  Read more here http://www.hpe.com/printer_friendly/9972858
